"What it made me realize is how many calories some people actually eat each day and have no idea."
So true. What's worse is that plenty of restaurants are now listing the caloric content of their foods and we choose to ignore it.
We went on a whole foods diet from September-December. I'm not going to lie and say it wasn't tough - it was - but well worth it. I didn't lose any weight, but my husband did. We were faithful... whole foods only, no alcohol, no sugar, no caffeine, nothing processed. Why'd we fall off the wagon? It started with my husband missing beer, then Christmas came, and it spiraled from there. It takes careful calculation and planning to achieve, but I can say both of us felt better and came to the realization that your body simply isn't equipped to break down a lot of the things we ingest. The good news is that despite discontinuing the diet, we're much more aware of what we're eating and generally eating less junk. We're already headed back towards the diet.
It's never easy, but that's because of the planning part. When you're busy (I work about 12 hours a day and coach Little League), going to the store and carefully shopping can be tiring. But neither of us felt deprived in the least on the diet. We were still able to have most of what we wanted, just modified. Whole wheat pasta actually tastes good! Hardest thing for Seattleites might be giving up coffee.
Great article, Dr. Graeme!
