Common Meds Linked to Hearing Loss According Denver Chiropractor

Posted on 12.7.10 |

Hearing Loss Chiropractor An amazing thing happened today.  I actually found a moment to read through some of my friends and colleagues blogs, after months of adjusting to life with two children.  While we don’t have it down pat yet, we are getting there and enjoying every minute of it.

As most of you know, the chiropractic profession was not founded due to neck pain, back pain, or headaches. Chiropractic was born via a cervical adjustment delivered to Harvey Lillard, by D.D. Palmer in hopes of restoring Mr. Lillard’s hearing.  The process was a success, and after a decade of hearing loss, Mr. Lillard was able to hear the hooves of horses on the cobblestones outside of the Ryan Building in Davenport, Iowa.  What chiropractor is not familiar with this history?

While reading through Dr. Trent Artichoker’s blog, I saw an article about hearing loss that reminded me of our rich history, but the culprit was not a physical accident, as happened to Mr. Lillard. The culprit for this loss of hearing has been due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, aka NSAIDs.

As a Denver chiropractor, Dr. Artichoker has a strong scientific background, and according to the the study he reviews, show that there is a major correlation between hearing loss and regular use of aspirin, acetaminophen, and NSAIDs. Regular use was defined as 2 uses or more per week, and showed a hazard ratio of 1.1-1.99, which is quite significant. It may not seem like a lot, but I bet to the people who lost their hearing as a direct result wish they made a different choice.

I may have to drop by the store tomorrow to see if any of the packages, labeling, or even inserts of these common medications warn of the major side effects that these drugs bring. Something tells me that a survey of regular uses would show that they have no idea this is a potential risk.

As Seattle chiropractors, my family does their best to educate each and everyone of our patients about the benefits of living a drug free lifestyle through regular chiropractic care. This is just another example of why chiropractors can be such an essential part of a long and healthy life.
